Why a web app
Not on the app stores, on purpose.
Viasterra lives on the web so it isn't tied to one device, one operating system, or one app store. You can access it from your phone, tablet, or computer, and add it to your home screen so it feels just like an app. No account to manage. No password to remember.
That also means we can keep the experience simple: one version, updated directly, wherever you use it.
The technology matters. But what matters more is what it gives you: a private place that's easy to reach, wherever life takes you.

A few things I noticed and liked: the restraint — no streaks, no badges, nothing making me feel bad for missing a day. The mood tag being optional, and placed after the writing instead of before it, is such a small choice, and it makes a big difference.
"On this day, one year ago" on the home screen — that's the thing that would keep me coming back, more than any reminder would.
The way backups work: bringing one in adds to what's there instead of replacing it. I've come across other journaling apps that get that wrong, and people lose things.
And the writing on the "no copy saved yet" prompt — it's honest instead of pushy. It felt like it was written by a person, and I liked that about it.

If you decide not to pay, your writing stays exactly where it is — readable, searchable, and exportable whenever you want it. What lapses is the ability to add new pages, not access to the pages you already wrote.
Paid through Gumroad. Your license key arrives by email — see the refund policy before you buy.
You can also give it to someone. At checkout there is a Give as a gift option — turn it on, enter their email address, and Gumroad delivers the purchase to them rather than to you, with a message from you if you want to add one. That address is the one the license key is made out to, so what they receive is properly theirs.
A gift lands best with someone who has already been writing in Viasterra and knows they want to keep it — the free window is how a person decides, and a gift arrives having skipped it. As with any purchase, all sales are final.
Privacy
We never see what you write.
Most journaling apps ask for your account details and read what's inside your journal to make the service work. That's a fair way to build one, and plenty of people are fine with it — Viasterra just offers another way. Your writing and your thoughts are yours and yours alone, unless you share them yourself.
What happens to what you write
The one exception: if you buy a license, Gumroad handles that payment and sees what any purchase needs — your email, never your writing. It's all explained in the privacy policy.
The trade-off: because nobody else holds a copy of your journal, nobody else can bring it back if something goes wrong. Clear your browser, remove the app, or lose the device, and the writing goes with it. Save a copy of your own now and then — Viasterra nudges you to, quietly, a few times a year, never more than that.
Questions
The things people ask.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no email address, and no password. You open the app and start writing. That is also why there is nothing to cancel and no list to be removed from.
The one and only time we receive your email address is when you buy a license through Gumroad — we need it to issue the key, and the key carries it so the app can show whose license it is. It is not used for anything else, and there is no mailing list to be added to.
Where is my journal actually stored?
In your browser's own storage, on the device you wrote it on. Adding the app to your home screen is the safest way to keep it, because a home-screen app's storage is not cleared the way an unvisited website's can be.
Can I use it on my phone and my computer?
Yes, but they keep separate journals — there is no automatic syncing, because syncing would mean a server, and a server would mean a copy of your writing somewhere other than with you.
To bring two devices together, save a copy on one and bring it into the other. The app merges rather than overwrites: pages already there are left alone, and the more recently edited version of a page wins.
What if I don't want to buy the license?
Nothing. Everything you wrote during the free window stays readable, searchable, and exportable — the app will not hold your words behind a wall. Only new entries pause once you reach 60 days and 100 free entries.
How does paying actually work?
Payment is handled entirely by Gumroad, who are the merchant of record — the seller on the receipt, and the ones responsible for collecting the right tax wherever you happen to be. They take cards, PayPal, and whatever local methods they support in your country.
We never see your card details. They do not pass through Viasterra, and there is nothing here that could store them. What reaches us afterwards is that a purchase was made and the email address it was made with, so a license can be issued to you.
Your license key is then sent to that address. It is checked on your own device, so once it is in, Viasterra never contacts anyone about it again — not us, not Gumroad — and it keeps working with no connection at all.
Can I get a receipt or an invoice?
Yes, and you do not have to ask us for it. Gumroad emails a receipt the moment you pay. If you need a full invoice — one with your name, a business name and an address on it, for reimbursement or for your own records — the confirmation page offers Need an invoice for this? alongside a Generate link, and the emailed receipt leads back to the same place, so it can be done later just as easily.
The document comes from Gumroad rather than from us, because they are the merchant of record and the seller named on it. The details you type into it go to them, not to us, and nothing about it touches your journal.
What if I lose my phone?
If you have saved a backup file, install the app on the new device and bring the backup in — the welcome screens offer to do exactly that. If you have not saved one, the writing is gone, and nobody can recover it, including us. This is the honest cost of nobody else having a copy.
Is my license tied to one device?
No. Use it on the devices you use yourself, and move it to a replacement whenever you need to — there is nothing to deactivate first, because nothing was activated with us to begin with. Your key carries the email you bought with, and the app shows it in Settings, so it is meant for you rather than for passing on.
What a license does not do is join those devices together. Each one keeps its own journal — they do not sync, because syncing would mean a server holding your writing, and there isn't one. To carry writing from one to another, save a copy on the first and bring it in on the second; the app merges rather than overwrites.
Who made this?
I am one person in the Philippines, and Viasterra was my own journal long before it was anything for sale. I still write in it every day, which is the only reason I notice the small things that are wrong with it.
The parts that press you to keep your own copy are there because I nearly lost mine. Everything came back, but I spent a night believing it hadn't — so the app now asks the questions I wish something had asked me, before it mattered.
