Privacy policy
Last updated [[DATE]]
The short version: your journal is stored on your own device and is never sent to us. We do not have an account for you, we do not have a copy of your writing, and we could not read it if we wanted to.
What we collect from the app
Nothing. VIASTERRA has no account system, no sign-in, and no server that receives your entries. Everything you write, and every photograph you add, is stored by your own browser on the device you wrote it on. The website hands your browser the application's files and nothing further passes between us.
The app makes no analytics calls, loads no tracking scripts, and sends no telemetry. It does not send your writing to any AI system, ours or anyone else's, at any time or for any purpose.
What is stored on your device
- Your pages, their dates, any mood or prompt attached to them, and any milestones you mark — held in your browser's local storage.
- Photographs you add, held in your browser's IndexedDB database. Location and camera metadata are stripped before a photograph is saved.
- Your settings, such as the appearance you chose and when you last saved a backup.
- Records of pages you have deleted, so that a deletion can travel to another device when you move a backup between them. These records hold no text from the page.
All of this stays on the device. You can remove it at any time from within the app, or by clearing your browser's data for this site.
Backups
When you save a copy, the app builds a file in your browser and hands it to you. Nothing is uploaded in the process. Where that file goes afterwards is entirely your choice, and anywhere you put it is outside this policy.
The one thing on the page that is not ours
The website is delivered by a hosting provider, and hosting providers can add scripts of their own to the pages they serve. Ours currently adds a bot-detection script from the network in front of the site. It is not part of the application, the application gives it nothing, and your entries are never passed to it — but it does run in your browser like anything else on the page, and you should know it is there.
The app names any such script it can detect, inside About this journal in its settings, rather than claiming a page is clean.
Payment
When you buy a licence, the payment is handled entirely by [[MERCHANT OF RECORD]], who act as the merchant of record. They collect whatever they need to take the payment and meet tax obligations — typically your email address, your country, and your payment details. We never see your card details. Their handling of that information is governed by their own privacy policy.
From that transaction we receive a record that a purchase was made, and the email address it was made with, so that a licence key can be issued to you and so we can help if something goes wrong. We do not use that address for anything else, and there is no mailing list.
Licence keys
Your licence key is checked by the app on your own device, using cryptography built into your browser. Checking it does not contact us or anyone else, which is why the app continues to work with no connection at all.
Children
VIASTERRA is not directed at children under [[AGE]], and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. Since we collect nothing from anyone, there is nothing held about a child to delete — but if you have a concern, please write to us.
Your rights over your data
Data protection law gives you rights to access, correct, export and delete the personal information a company holds about you. In our case the answer is unusually simple: we hold none of your journal, so there is nothing for us to produce or erase. Your writing is already in your hands, and the app can export all of it as a file at any moment.
For the purchase record and email address described above, write to [[CONTACT EMAIL]] and we will provide or delete what we hold. Requests about payment information itself should go to [[MERCHANT OF RECORD]], who hold it.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change ever meant that the app started collecting something, it would be said plainly here and in the app's own changelog, not buried.
